Four Corners ...

Tonight we have an informal evening of the '4 corners'. We may not actually be in 4 corners and we have actually got 5 set-ups that members can visit (we can't flippin count!). At the beginning of the night we would like the membership to split into 4 or 5 groups and then move round from each activity to the other. This isn't essential and if there is a corner that you are already an 'expert' in then you can easily miss that one out. There will be a tea & coffee set up and if we have sufficient numbers of helpers then we hope that this might form a 6th corner that members can visit during the night.

Corner 1: Margaret Elliot will have a male model on hand to try out a simple portrait photography set-up. There is a lot you can learn even from a basic portrait set-up and this should be good fun.

Corner 2: John McLean will be on hand to demonstrate mount cutting on a Logan mount cutter. This subject is sometimes covered in our practical nights but for those of you who might have missed one of these evenings, then knowing how to mount your prints is essential for club photography.

Corner 3: Ian Findlay will have a macro/still life set-up. He will have a 105 macro lens available for Nikon users to try out and will be covering a few of the tips and tricks of close up photography.

Corner 4: Probably by far the most important corner for some! Bring your camera and manual and let the boffins blow your mind! Mick Durham and Edmund Fellowes will be on hand to run through what all those buttons do on your camera. They are Nikon and Canon experts but I'm sure they can advise on other makes too. They will also be discussing lenses - big ones, little ones, fast ones, slow ones, very expensive ones and very very expensive ones.

Corner 5: John D Wilson (windows) and Tom Langlands (mac) will be on hand to talk 'computers'. Depending on the software they have on their respective machines, both will be available to answer those niggly computer questions. They may not have the exact software you are using but some of the principles of basic work flow are the same. Between the 2 of them they should have Bridge, Photoshop, Elements and Lightroom which they will be able to discuss at least. Tom is also a new Mac convert and his insight into switching platforms will be enlightening I'm sure (probably not as easy as it's made out to be).

Bringing you camera is essential if you want advice on its workings or want to take pictures but there will be a lot you can take in just by joining in. At least we can have a good chat at the coffee table if nothing else.

Club Draw, last week (17th) was won by John Repath, with a prize pot of £25.50; congratulations John.

To-night is a fresh draw, with fresh sheet; £1 a go.

So, another 'corner' for you to try - you might even win some money (to go towards all the things the other corners are going to inspire you to want).

Good Luck.

Apologies if mentioned at last club mtg, was sunning it in France!  - what's in the "4 corners?" :-)

Another really useful night with lots of help and advice on offer. Didn't get the time to visit all corners but learned lots - thanks all.

Thanks Caroline, it's a shame so few members turned up. It took a lot of organising, a lot of equipment lugged and a great deal of time spent setting up. Does the turnout mean that practical nights are just unpopular for Wednesday's? However, if you took some tips from the night that helps your photography then that's good news.

Glad you enjoyed it Caroline. Cheers.

Between depth of field and Lightroom there were a few real 'lightbulb' moments for me last night.  It really helps to be able to learn in a small group situation where you feel comfortable asking questions.  I really enjoyed my night - even my chat with Gordon! Haha - thanks all.
